40 Turkish TV channels join donation campaign for Gaza

August 7, 2014 at 4:10 pm

Some 40 Turkish TV channels and more than 40 local radio stations joined a donation campaign which started yesterday evening and lasted until the early hours of the morning organised by the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (İHH) to support the Gaza Strip, the Anadolu news agency reported.

Nearly 12 million Turkish liras ($5.55 million) were raised by the campaign which was organised by trade unionists, politicians, journalists who covered the events in Gaza, businessmen and representatives from civil society organisations as well as the father of Furkan Dogan, who was killed by Israeli troops during their attack on the Mavi Marmara flotilla to break the siege on Gaza in 2010.

The Head of the Turkish Foundation, Bulent Yildirim announced that a funeral prayer in absentia will be performed on Friday for the victims who fell during the Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Yildirim pointed out during the broadcast that solidarity with Gaza brings solidarity with the rest of the Islamic world, which is witnessing similar tragedies, especially East Turkistan or the Xinjiang Autonomous region in China, which witness the killing of thousands of Turkish Uyghur Muslims.
