Turkey foiled Al-Maliki's coup attempt

Turkey foiled an attempt by outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki to overthrow the newly appointed Haider Al-Abadi, the country’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said.

Davutoglu noted that his government continued to work beyond the announcement of the results of presidential election and focused on the developments in Iraq, when they thwarted an operation by Al-Maliki to carry out a coup on the day of the Turkish presidential elections on August 10.

According to a Turkish news site, he explained: “We received communication from Iraq at one o’clock at night, we were contacted by the Kurds as well as other groups, they said tanks had surrounded the presidential palace. We took action immediately in cooperation with the United States, and we sought to block Al-Maliki.”

He added that Turkey has sought to establish a link between Turkey and Gaza to transport the wounded and treat them in the country.
