Egypt’s Minister of Religious Endowments Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa hailed Al-Azhar Imam Dr Ahmed El-Tayyib’s recent visit to the Suez Canal Development Project as “a sign of national consensus” on the project.
He added that El-Tayyib’s visit legitimises the project, first launched under the now ousted government of Mohamed Morsi.
He also cited El-Tayyib’s call on all Egyptians to contribute to the project by purchasing the investment certificates allocated to it, which “settled the dispute over the permissibility of these certificates”.
El-Tayyib visited the construction site on Sunday, accompanied by a delegation of Al-Azhar students and scholars.
Work on the Suez project started on August 5.
