Iraqi army begins regaining control of Tikrit from IS

The Iraqi Army, supported by Air Force, began this morning the process of regaining control of Tikrit, at the center of the Salahuddin province, from the Islamic State (IS), according to a military source.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Khalid of the Samarra Operations Command told the Anadolu news agency: “The army began the progress on the south side of Tikrit and was able to control theTikrit Teaching Hospital and the neighbourhood of Aldiom.”

He added: “Fierce battles are now ongoing as the Air Force bomb militant strongholds.”

IS took control of Tikrit on 12 June, days after the fall of Mosul.
