Egypt police disperse anti-military secular protest in Cairo

August 31, 2014 at 10:59 am

Egyptian security forces fired tear gas on a protest by a secular group in Cairo Saturday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The protest was organised by the Third Current movement, a secular group opposed to both Brotherhood and military rule.

The protesters chanted against the military, and called for an end to military rule. They also called for retribution for those killed extra-judicially in Rabaa and Nahda squares in Cairo last year.

Security forces clashed with the march as it was heading to Tahrir square in central Cairo, firing tear gas on the protesters, who responded by shooting fireworks.

Security forces forcibly dispersed the protest following clashes with protesters in Tahrir Street and Dokki neighborhood near Tahrir square.

Saturday’s protest by the Third Current marked the first anniversary of the killing of six members in a protest organised by the group in Mohandeseen neighborhood in Cairo on 30 August 2013.

The Third Current was launched two months prior to the ouster of Mohamed Morsi under the slogan: “No to the military, the Muslim Brotherhood, and the remnants of Mubarak’s regime.”
