Algerian Parliament Speaker Mohamed Larbi Ould Khelifa said yesterday that his country is making sincere efforts to protect the Arab world from what he described as “the dangers of division and fragmentation”, the Anadolu news agency reported.

Khelifa’s remarks came in a statement issued by the National People’s Assembly about his meeting with the Arab Parliament Speaker Ahmed bin Mohamed Al-Jarwan who is visiting Algeria.

According to the statement, Khelifa confirmed “Algeria’s keenness on protecting the Arab nations, particularly from the risk of fragmentation and division.”

The statement said Khelifa also reviewed “Algeria’s sincere efforts in the framework of the Arab League to support Arab unity.”

Khelifa stressed “the importance of joint Arab action in light of the challenges and dangers in the Arab world” pointing out that “there are challenges facing Algeria, which shares borders with several countries that suffer from political and security disturbances” in reference to Libya and Mali.

As for Libya, which has been politically divided since the overthrow of the Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Khelifa confirmed “Algeria’s support for dialogue and renouncing of violence between the Libyan people to preserve the Libyan unity and build their own national institutions away from external interference.”
