Rouhani: US attacks on Syria are 'illegal'

September 24, 2014 at 10:37 am

Airstrikes being launched by a US led coalition against Islamic State (ISIS) targets are “illegal”, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said.

In an interview on American TV in New York City, where he will attend the 69th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Rouhani said the US had directed 14 airstrikes at ISIS bases in Syria since yesterday morning and that they “had taken struck without getting the approval of the Syrian government, or a resolution form the UN Security Council”.

The Iranian president said the American strikes in Syria differ from the strikes carried out by the US in Iraq recently: “Although the United States formally requested help in order to hit the headquarters of ISIS in Iraq, it did not apply to Bashar Al-Assad for the airstrikes carried out in Syria.”

Asked if he will meet with his American counterpart Barack Obama, Rouhani said, that a meeting is not in his agenda, saying: “I believe this meeting will probably not take place.”
