Yemen's ruling party sacks Hadi as party secretary-general

November 8, 2014 at 3:12 pm

Yemen’s ruling General People’s Congress party has sacked President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi from his post as GPC secretary-general.

“The party’s General Committee has decided to sack Hadi from his post as deputy chairman and secretary-general of the party,” a party leader told Anadolu Agency on Saturday.

He, however, did not explain whether a replacement has been chosen.

Party sources earlier told Anadolu Agency that calls for sacking Hadi had surfaced following reports that the US had ordered former president Ali Abdullah Saleh to leave Yemen or face sanctions.

The US embassy in Sanaa had earlier denied reports about ordering Saleh to leave the country.

Yemen has been dogged by political turmoil since a popular uprising that erupted in 2011 toppled Saleh one year later, ending his 33-year rule.
