Egyptian universities have recently witnessed a wave of student demonstrations as part of a programme of anti-coup activities called “breaking the siege” aiming to confront the security oppression carried out against students and universities, Alamat Online news reported on Tuesday.

According to a female student demonstrator, students at Cairo University staged protests against the security services’ violent treatment against them, raising posters reading “No to besieging our universities”, “Return our freedoms” and “Freedom for students”.

Alamat Online reported that at the University of Hilwan, students organised a march on campus calling for breaking the security siege being imposed on Egypt’s universities.

Students at Al-Zaqaziq University gathered in front of the office of Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education, Sayyid Abdul-Khaliq, chanting slogans against him and against the ministry’s facilitation of the security services inside the universities.

Other universities also witnessed protests, including Al-Fayoum University. Alamat Online reported that demonstrators there protested the firing of 24 students and the suspension of nine others.

The Anti-Coup Movement published pictures on its official Facebook page showing the Egyptian security services beating students and attempting to expel them from the university.

At the University of Bani-Sowif, the security services reportedly beat two students at the university gate and a campus security worker then opened the gates so that the police could further attack the students, resulting in them cancelling their protest.
