Libyans protest against illegitimate parliament

November 15, 2014 at 1:37 pm

Hundreds of Libyans protested in the capital Tripoli and other Libyan cities on Friday evening against the illegitimate parliament and in support of the ruling of the Supreme Court, which called for the dissolution of the parliament.

The Supreme Court in the country ruled that the Libyan parliament held in Tobruk is illegitimate, prompting activists on Thursday to encourage Libyans to take to the streets on Friday in support for the ruling and under the slogan “the ruling is powerful and Libya is one country.”

The protesters also carried posters calling on the international community to recognise the ruling and stop dealing with the parliament and the government in Tobruk.

In addition, the protesters refused to recognise the plans of the UN mission for support in Libya, which is seeking to bring conflicting parties to table of dialogue. They chanted: “No dialogue with anyone who kills our sons.”

The protestors also blasted the UN positon towards the continuation of targeting civilians in Benghazi, in the east, and Kakleh, in the west, by the forces of the renegade Colonel Khalifa Haftar. Support was exhibited for Fajr Libya – the anti-Haftar alliance.

Other Libyan cities witnessed similar protests. Anadolu news agency said that there was no evidence of any pro-Hafter protests or demonstrations along Libya on Friday.

For 16 weeks, Libyans have been protesting against the parliament in Tobruk, which is supported by Haftar and recognised by the international community, and are calling upon it to dissolve.
