Aboul Fotouh faces charges of 'treason'

Former presidential candidate and head of Strong Egypt Party Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh faces charges of treason and requests to bring him before the Egyptian Military Justice.

On Saturday, an Egyptian lawyer filed a complaint to the military prosecutor against Aboul Fotouh requesting he be tried for “treason”.

In his lawsuit, the lawyer Samir Sabri said that Aboul Fotouh deceived the Egyptians when he denied that he belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood and ran in the presidential elections under this misleading title.

According to the local website Al-Watan, the lawyer said that “one of the security sources revealed that a meeting was held on November 11 between Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh and the revolutionary socialists following American dictations for planning to demonstrate on the anniversary of the Mohamed Mahmoud Street events, calming that Aboul Fotouh said at the time that “our revolution this time will be an armed revolution, not a peaceful one”.

According to Sabri’s allegations, “Aboul Fotouh requested the demonstrators throw Molotov cocktails and stones at the army and police officers, and to get into clashes with them in order to find a justification for the use of the weapons against the members of the police and armed forces.”

According to the lawsuit: “Aboul Fotouh acted as the link between the Socialists, April 6 movement and the young Salafists to mobilise the largest number of young people under the guise of defending the revolution of January 25, as the real causes of the armed revolution which was called for by the Salafist Group on November 28 have been lately clarified.”

“This situation places the Nour Party and all the other political Islam parties against the wind, and deprived them of the most important goal they have been working to achieve during that last period: ousting Al-Sisi and taking over the government once again so as to achieve the plan that aims to divide Egypt and to satisfy their American masters, thus guaranteeing support for staying in power as long as possible.”

In his lawsuit, Sabri demanded bringing Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh to a military court to stand trial for the crime of “treason”. He presented a portfolio of documents supporting his complaint.
