An Egyptian student died while in custody at a prison in Cairo, a student group in opposition to Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi announced yesterday.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Interior denied that the student died of torture and claimed that the cause of death was fatigue while he was held in custody stressing that the authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death.

Students Against the Coup announced on Facebook that Mohammed Ramadan, a law student from Ain Shams University, died as a result of torture in a Cairo prison.

Gehad Sultan, the spokesperson for the group at Ain Shams University, said: “Mohammed Ramadan, a law student who was arrested 13 days ago, died as a result of torture.”

In a statement to the Anadolu Agency, General Hani Abdel-Latif’s said: “The assumption that Ramadan died in prison as a result of torture is not only untrue but a wholly illegitimate assumption.”

Ramadan was rushed to the hospital where he died from complications. The authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death. Ramadan is one of many Egyptian students who have been targeted by the authorities since the start of this academic year.
