Badie trial to restart today

Cairo Criminal Court will today resume hearing the defence case in the trial of Dr Mohamed Badie, leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, and his deputy, Khairat Al-Shater and 15 others who refused the military coup.

The defendants:

  • Dr Mohamed Badie, general guide of the Muslim Brotherhood
  • Khairat Al-Shater, deputy general guide
  • Dr Rashad Bayoumi, deputy general guide
  • Dr Saad El-Katatni, the former head of the People’s Assembly
  • Dr Essam El-Erian, former presidential advisor
  • Dr Mohamed Beltagy, a former member of the People’s Assembly
  • Mohammed Mahdi Akef, the former general guide
  • Dr Osama Yassin, former minister of youth
  • Ayman Hodhod, the official formerly in charge of the security dossier in the presidency
  • Ahmed Shousha, a member of the Guidance Office
  • Dr Hussam Abu Bakr, a member of the Guidance Office
  • Mahmoud El-Zanaty
  • Abdul Rahim Mohammed Abdul Rahim
  • Rida Fahmi
  • Mustafa Abdel Azim Bashmawi

Justice Moataz Khafagy will head the case in which the detainees are charged with “murder and incitement to murder, attempted murder, possession of firearms and live ammunition, joining an armed gang aimed at terrorising innocent people and incitement to bullying and violence.”

Mustafa Bashmawi’s defence team said an independent newspaper editor said that there were a number of thugs who were heavily armed and they opened fire on the Guidance Office.

The witness added that the chief of police also went to the top of one of the highest buildings and fired at the building.
