Egyptian court jails 20 Morsi supporters

November 18, 2014 at 12:09 pm

Twenty pro-Morsi activists were sentenced to between one and 25 years in jail yesterday.

An Egyptian court convicted the defendants on charges of rioting during a protest in support of deposed Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi last year, a judicial source said.

The source said that the sentences were subject to appeal and that a number of Salafists and other groups’ members were included in the ruling.

“The court convicted the culprits for rioting, inciting violence, setting army vehicles on fire and blocking the traffic in the city of Al-Sowees in the wake of the dispersal of the Rabaa Al-Adawiya sit-in in August last year,” the judicial source said.

Another court said it would announce the sentences of five pro-Morsi activists on charges of entering Sudan illegally and being in a military zone without permission.

On November 2 the military prosecution service accepted an appeal on a ruling against the five after another court sentenced them for one year in prison each and fined them 500 Egyptian pounds ($70).
