More than 200 Sunni and Shia religious scholars in Iran condemned the violation of Al-Aqsa Mosque’s sanctity at the hands of Israeli settlers and security forces.

The scholars issued a joint statement yesterday describing the Israeli violations as a source of unrest in the region.

The semi-official Iranian news agency Mehr reported that 216 Shia and Sunni scholars issued a statement condemning the desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem, which are considered “safe havens and a temple for all the Abrahamic religions”.

They expressed concern regarding Israel’s “racist policies towards these sanctities”.

The statement stressed that the Palestinian people have the right to defend their religious sanctities. “What is currently going on in the Holy Land is a continuation of 66 years of Zionist crimes backed by imperial powers against the Palestinian people.”
