Fatah to name deputy for Abbas

December 2, 2014 at 10:43 am

Fatah members are to discuss the idea of naming a deputy chairman for the movement next month, the Palestinian newspaper Al-Resalah reported Fatah Revolutionary Council member Abdullah Abdullah saying yesterday.

Speaking to the newspaper, Abdullah said that Fatah had launched specialist committees to hold the movement’s conference due in January, noting that the idea is to be discussed in the conference.

He said there would be no discussions regarding nominating a presidential candidate from Gaza during the conference. Instead, it would discuss internal Fatah issues and leaders to be elected during the conference would discuss the issue of the presidential candidate.

Al-Resalah reported informed sources saying that the current Fatah Leader Mahmoud Abbas has been working to rule out members who are close to the dismissed Fatah strongman Mohammed Dahlan from taking senior positions.

The sources said that Abbas had postponed the conference until January to allow him time to eliminate his opposition.

Meanwhile, Abdullah downplayed Dahlan’s role and his expected efforts to undermine the conference.
