Israel: Saudi focused on tackling Sunni extremism

December 8, 2014 at 11:28 am

Saudi Arabia’s focus on addressing the risk of Sunni extremism led it to back Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi’s plan to isolate elected President Mohamed Morsi, General Amos Gilad, director of Policy and Political-Military Affairs at the Israeli Ministry of Defence, said.

During an interview with Channel 10 on Friday night, Gilad said that Riyadh prioritises facing Islamic Sunni organisations over confronting Iran.

On the other hand, Orientalist, Eli Fouda said the Saudi regime has zero tolerance towards the activities of Sunni preachers who are trying to break the regime’s rules.

He added that the Saudi authorities did not hesitate to arrest Sheikh Mohammed Al-Arifi, the most popular religious leader in the country.
