EU court removes Hamas from terror list

Hamas has been removed from an influential EU list of terrorist organisations.

A press release following the decision, issued yesterday by the General Court of the European Union, said: ”In today’s judgment, the General Court finds that the contested measures are based not on acts examined and confirmed in decisions of competent authorities, but on factual imputations derived from the press and the internet.”

”The Court annuls the contested measures while temporarily maintaining the effects of those measures in order to ensure the effectiveness of any possible future freezing of funds,” the court added.

“The effects of the measures are maintained for a period of three months, or, if an appeal is brought before the Court of Justice, until this appeal is closed.”

Hamas opposed being on the list, which was adopted in 2001.
