Violent clashes broke out between Peshmerga forces and elements of the Islamic State (ISIS) organisation in Mosul, northern Iraq, yesterday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The agency’s reporter said the Peshmerga forces moved in to place in the early hours of the morning carrying heavy weapons.

The reporter pointed out that the village witnessed fierce clashes between the Peshmerga forces and elements of ISIS, during which the Peshmerga pounded the organisation’s sites with heavy weapons including tanks, machine guns supported by the international coalition’s fighters.

The Peshmerga forces removed many of the mines planted by ISIS in the areas from which they withdrew. Several bridges were also blown up.

Yazidi gunmen accompanied the Peshmerga forces, who have been preparing for the operation to regain control of the city of Sinjar, northern Iraq, following instructions from the President of Kurdistan Massoud Barzani.

The leaders of the forces said recapturing the city of Sinjar and Sinjar Mountains, which shelter thousands of Yazidis, will enhance security on the Iraqi-Syrian border.
