More than 600 sick Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club (PPC) yesterday warned of the dangerous repercussions following the Israeli authorities’ continued policy to ignore the needs of sick Palestinian prisoners, a statement said.

The organisation said that 600 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails are suffering from different kinds of diseases. Some 160 of them are suffering from critical conditions.

PPC mentioned the case of Palestinian prisoner Ali Hassan from Qalqilia, who was humiliated and torture during interrogation.

In 2004, his hands were tied together behind his back and he was later hanged from his hands. PPC said medical reports showed that Hassan suffers from a herniated disk and has been awaiting surgery for several years.

According to the PPC’s statement, Hassan is given painkillers by injection. He also suffers from chronic asthma.

Hassan, who has been in prison since 2003, is serving a life sentence in addition to seven years.

Prisoner Othman Younis, also from Qalqilia, is also serving life. He has been awaiting treatment since 2003 when he was arrested as he was shot 24 times.

PPC also mentioned that case of Mohamed Rashid from Hebron, who was hit in his pelvis during his arrest in 2012. He is in urgent need of surgery.

Rashid was arrested when he was a minor and is serving a nine-year jail term.
