Indirect talks between Jordan and ISIL

December 27, 2014 at 4:07 pm

Official Jordanian sources have revealed to Al Jazeera that indirect talks between the Jordanian government and ISIL are taking place for the release of the Jordanian pilot captured by ISIL.

The sources said that prominent leaders have begun intensive efforts with regional and international parties, as well as tribal leaders inside Iraq to search for mediators and discuss possible scenarios related to the pilot.

Toward this end, contacts have been made with the Turkish and Qatari officials. The sources confirmed that there are also contacts with the Sunni tribal leaders inside Iraq.

Meanwhile, observers have not ruled out direct meetings with ISIL at some point during the talks. The Jordanian intelligence, it is believed have acquired a large database about ISIL after it had succeeded in hacking the websites of individuals associated with the group.

“There are indirect talks taking place behind closed doors,” a senior minister in the Jordanian government told Al Jazeera. “All that concerns us is the release of our son, Mu’ath Kasasbeh. We cannot give more details.”

He added: “We have many terrorists linked to ISIL and we are seriously considering talking about them.”
