War planes affiliated with Libya’s retired General Khalifa Haftar attacked positions of the Libya Dawn militia inside the city of Misrata on Sunday, Anadolu Agency reported.

Libya Dawn spokesman, Ala Hwaik, said that, “an airplane affiliated with Haftar’s forces shelled Misrata airport, the iron and steel factory and the Air Force Academy in the city without causing human or material damages.”

The attack comes after the expiration of the 72-hour deadline given by Haftar forces for the Libya Dawn militia to withdraw from the Oil Crescent area.

The director of the Misrata Security Directorate, Saleh Esmyo, said that “two air strikes targeted the city’s airport and the duty free area.” Meanwhile, witnesses who spoke said that the iron and steel complex and military site in the Kherob area of the city were bombarded.

Misrata is the headquarters of the Libya Dawn Central Shield, the largest faction of the militia and where the majority of the militia leaders live.
