Iran warns ISIS against nearing its border

January 7, 2015 at 9:24 am

The commander of the ground forces of the Iranian Army, Brigadier Ahmed Reda Bordstan, warned the Islamic State (ISIS) against getting to within 40 kilometres of the Iranian border.

In a statement sent to the official Iranian news site IRNA, Bordstan said: “Our borders, which are at a depth of 40 kilometres within the Iraqi territory, are a red line, so we warn ISIS, the terrorist organisation, against crossing this red line.”

Bordstan stressed the army was ready to confront ISIS. He said ISIS militants had retreated from the border area after receiving the warning.

Last week, ISIS assassinated a commander in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Brigadier General Hamid Taghavi, in the Iraqi city of Samarra.
