A leader of the Shia Houthi group proposed the formation of a presidential council to rule the country shortly after the resignation of Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, the Anadolu Agency reported.

On Twitter, Abu Malik Yusuf Al-Feeshy proposed a presidential council of the Yemeni revolutionary and political forces and representatives from the army, the security and people’s committees be formed so that all Yemeni forces participate in managing this transitional period.

In another post he added: “Yemen is on the verge of living in security, stability and prosperity,” describing Hadi’s resignation as “good news for all Yemenis”.

Earlier in the day, President Hadi submitted his resignation to the Parliament Speaker, just minutes after the government’s resignation, according to a senior presidential source.

The source explained that President Hadi “presented his resignation to the Parliament Speaker, Yahya Ali Al-Raei under the Constitution”.

Hadi is reported to have said in his resignation letter: “We have endured the responsibility of the presidency and you do not need us to explain the security, political and economic conditions that led to this day.”

“Given the developments that have emerged to the peaceful power transition… we found that we are unable to achieve the goals which we fought so hard to reach… For this we apologise to you personally and your council and I extend to you my resignation from the presidency of the Republic of Yemen,” Hadi said.
