Qatar supports Algeria mediation efforts in Libya and Mali

Qatar’s Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation has expressed his country’s support for Algeria’s “considerable” mediation efforts in Libya and Mali in collaboration with the UN. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Bin Jassim Al-Thani was speaking in Algiers on Sunday when he made the announcement, reported Anadolu.

According to Algeria’s state-run APS news, the Qatari official met with Algeria’s Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelhamid Senouci Bereksi, after arriving in the capital. He is in the North African state in order to “finalise and examine investment opportunities and prepare for the visit of Qatar’s Prime Minister next month.”

Algeria announced the launch of consultations a few weeks ago, in coordination with the UN, to bring the Libyan factions together for talks in an effort to avoid foreign military intervention.

“We are working to encourage our brothers in Libya to resort to dialogue and reconciliation to reach a comprehensive solution,” Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said last month. “Algeria supports the modest steps which were launched in Geneva under the auspices of the UN.” The formation of a representative government in Libya is the stated aim, he added.
