Egypt refers Badie to military court

February 23, 2015 at 3:51 pm

The Egyptian Public Prosecution has transferred the case of Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Leader Mohammed Badie and 83 others to a military court over accusations of violence, local news reports said yesterday.

This is not the first time members of the Brotherhood have been referred to military courts over accusations of violence.

According to the news agency, senior Brotherhood leader Mohamed Al-Biltaji, whose 17-year old daughter was killed by a sniper during the anti-coup protests in 2013, and Sheikh Safwat Hijazi, who has been known to be one of the most moderate Islamic preachers in Egypt, were among those referred to military court.

The defendants are accused of violent acts in Suez, including burning military vehicles and churches following the dispersal of the Rabaa Al-Adawiya and Al-Nahda protests in August 2013.

Badie has been sentenced to death in three cases and life in prison in a fourth. A fifth conviction was overturned on appeal two weeks ago.
