Libya talks 'breakthrough', says UN envoy

March 7, 2015 at 1:04 pm

The UN Special Representative to Libya, Bernardino Leon, said on Friday that the Libyan national dialogue had achieved a “breakthrough” on its second day, Anadolu news agency reported. The talks opened in Morocco on Thursday with the aim of resolving the conflict in crisis-hit Libya.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Moroccan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Mezouar, Leon said that the UN-sponsored talks had made progress both in terms of the formation of a proposed unity government and security issues.

Earlier on Friday, a member of Libya’s Tripoli-based parliament told Anadolu that agreement had been reached between Libyan factions on the criteria for selecting a prime minister.

The North African country has been in a state of turmoil since a bloody uprising ended the decades-long rule of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in late 2011. Since then, the country’s stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of government, each with its own institutions and military capabilities.
