Houthis storm into Ta'izz

March 21, 2015 at 2:30 pm

Eyewitnesses and security sources have said that Houthi rebels have stormed into the Ta’izz governorate in Yemen, which overlooks the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, Anadolu reported on Friday. Houthi militias apparently entered Ta’izz without any resistance and took over the local Special Forces’ base.

Dozens of protesters from the city of Ta’izz demonstrated outside the base and called for the Houthis to leave the area, eyewitnesses told Anadolu.

The Houthis’ move came after a statement by the Security Committee in the district calling for a ban on the entry of any military, security or civilian reinforcements in Ta’izz. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the Houthis went ahead and occupied the district, disregarding the wishes of the local population.
