Conservative party manifesto: “Everything we do around the world will be driven by a determination to protect your security and help you prosper.”

The Prime Minister David Cameron today launched the Tory party’s manifesto at an event in Swindon, Wiltshire.

In terms of foreign policy, the manifesto stated: “Everything we do around the world will be driven by a determination to protect your security and help you prosper.” It promised to ensure Britain was a major player on the world stage, use diplomacy to protect interests, uphold British values and tackle threats to security and prosperity.

The manifesto criticised Labour for failing to plan properly for Iraq’s reconstruction and failing to provide British armed forces with the equipment they needed in Afghanistan. It promised to support the Afghani government to ensure the country “never again becomes a haven for international terrorists”.

It also pledged to “support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, robustly defending the right of Israel to protect its security, while continuing to condemn illegal settlement building, which undermines the prospects for peace.”

The Tories commended the decision to intervene in Libya to “stop a massacre” and help women and children who have fled violence in Syria. They also made commitments to support persecuted Christians in the Middle East.

In-order to protect Britain, the manifesto pledged to maintain the size of the regular armed services, retain the Trident nuclear weapons programme and build a new fleet of four Successor ballistic missile submarines.

While it stated that the Conservatives had strengthened counter-terrorism laws making it easier to prevent people from travelling abroad to fight and also to control the return of those that do, it also outlined how it would go further. New laws to tackle the spread of extremism in the UK would be introduced, such as Banning Orders for extremist organisations and the creation of new Extremism Disruption Orders which restrict the harmful activities of individuals deemed to be extremists.
