UNSC calls on UN chief to find a political solution to Yemeni crisis

The United Nations Security Council yesterday called on the UN chief Ban Ki-moon to find a political solution to the current crisis in Yemen, the Anadolu Agency reported.

Jordan’s Ambassador Dina Kawar told reporters at the UN headquarters in New York that the Security Council stressed during its closed meeting yesterday that Ban should start looking to find a political solution for the crisis in Yemen.

The member states stressed the importance that the UN’s new envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed starts his mission as soon as possible, Kawar – whose country holds the council’s rotating presidency – said.

The UN Secretary-General announced on Saturday the appointment of Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as its new envoy to Yemen replacing Moroccan diplomat Jamal Benomar who resigned from the post.

Kawar stressed that the humanitarian and security situation in Yemen has become very bad and said it’s necessary to focus on increasing humanitarian efforts to allow assistance to reach those in need across the country.

Last week, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia announced the end of a military offensive in Yemen and the beginning of a political initiative that aims to restore security and stability there.
