More than 100 tortured to death last month in Syria's prisons

The Syrian Network for Human Rights has documented at least 108 people tortured to death in Syria’s prisons last month alone, PLS48.net reported on Monday. Of these, 104 were killed by the Damascus regime, three by Al-Nusra Front and one by ISIS.

The network said in a report that torturing people to death has been a regular occurrence since the uprising began in 2011. This proves, it claims, that torture has been used systematically against prisoners. The most killings took place in Adlib, where 19 deaths are recorded, followed by Hama, Daraa and the other governorates.

Of those killed, four were known to be journalists, three were teachers and there was one Red Crescent volunteer. Some of those murdered in this way were over 70 years-old. The network published a number of pictures of the victims and pointed out that the head of the Syrian regime, Bashar Al-Assad, is aware of these killings so they amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The group called for assistance to issue a complaint to the ICC Public Prosecutor due to the “full impairment” of the UN Security Council regarding any deterrence of the Syrian regime despite the clear-cut evidence of its crimes.
