Some 6,000 children are subjected to harassment in Israel every year, State Comptroller Yosef Shapira revealed in his annual report yesterday.

According to Radio Israel, the state comptroller’s report, said: “Thousands of children are exposed to sexual or physical violence on an annual basis, without providing psychological help to them in the children’s shelters.”

The report estimated the numbers of children who are being sexually assaulted at around 6,000 each year, “in addition to 13,000 children who are being exposed to violence.”

The state comptroller prepares a comprehensive annual report on the performance of the Israeli government to the Speaker of the Knesset every year.

He is responsible for monitoring the Israeli government’s performance and security and submitting the files to the Israeli police for investigation.

The report pointed to the failure of the government’s plans to reduce the differences between Jewish and non-Jewish citizens in terms of running kindergartens, in addition to the existence of shortcomings in the performance of some Israeli institutions.

The report also pointed to the existence of a serious shortage of kindergartens in the Bedouin areas, adding that the curriculum in the current kindergartens is not culturally and linguistically appropriate.

In an earlier statement to the Anadolu Agency, the head of the Islamic movement in the Negev, Osama Al-Aqaibi, accused “Israel of neglecting the current educational facilities, pointing to Israel’s failure to build new schools to meet the demand.”
