May 12, 2015 at 1:48 pm

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi is spearheading efforts to resolve Libya’s political crisis, calling for general elections later this year, Quds Press has reported.

The news agency quoted Tunisian and Libyan sources as saying that President Essebsi had recently received a member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Dr Ali Muhammad Al-Sallabi, to discuss the latest local, regional and international political efforts to support reconciliation efforts in Libya.

Essebsi is said to have stressed during his meeting with Sallabi that the most effective way to solve Libya crisis is by giving a voice to the Libyan people and allow them to choose their leaders in an election later this year.

Sallabi is reported to have made a similar proposal to Tunisia’s foreign minister, Taieb Baccouche, and leader of Tunisia’s Ennahda movement, Rachid Ghannouchi.

Tunisia has been leading international efforts to resolve Libya’s political crisis, drawing on its own experience following the 2011 popular revolution.
