Russia warns against sending ground troops to Yemen

Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, yesterday warned of the repercussions of a ground operation to resolve the crisis in Yemen.

In an interview with Russia 24 TV, Churkin said launching such an operation in the country with the participation of foreign forces will lead to "catastrophic repercussions, including on human level that may lead to a very serious humanitarian disaster".

The Russian diplomat stressed the need for all Yemeni parties to meet as soon as possible.

He added that the situation in Yemen is very serious but there is a possibility of finding a solution there with the UN Security Council's assistance.

Earlier yesterday the Russian Foreign Ministry called on all parties in the conflict to respect the humanitarian ceasefire in the country which began on Tuesday evening.
