Sami Annan's son denies his father under house arrest

Press reports in Egypt have stated that Lieutenant General Sami Annan, former Armed Forces chief of staff, is currently under house arrest and is being monitored by sovereign agencies. However, his son denied this.

Tahrir newspaper, which is closely linked to the security forces, has reported that Annan’s telephone has been tapped, that he has been prohibited from traveling outside of Egypt, and that his movements have been limited to his home in El-Tagamu El Khames and his office in El-Dokki. This suggests that he has been put under a situation similar to house arrest.

The newspaper also quoted sources it described as being close to Egyptian decision-makers saying that the relationship between Lieutenant General Annan and Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi, leader of the military coup is very “tense”. However, the newspaper did not mention the reasons for such tension. These relations are different to Al-Sisi’s relations with Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.

On his part, Dr Samir Annan, the son of Lieutenant General Sami Annan, denied reports of his father being put under house arrest. He stated that his father did not receive any notices informing of this and that he has been going about his daily routine as normal.

In a press statement, Samir noted that there is no reason that the state would prevent his father from travelling or monitor him.
