Egypt denounces international criticism of its judiciary

May 20, 2015 at 10:04 am

Egypt has hit back at critics of its judiciary saying its legal system is just and complies with international law.

The Anadolu Agency reported a statement issued by the Egyptian justice ministry denouncing the international criticism, calling it a “violation of international conventions”.

Over the weekend, an Egyptian court in Cairo sentenced ousted President Mohamed Morsi and the cases of 121 others to death. Their cases have been transferred to the Grand Mufti for his consideration. A final decision is set to be announced on 2 June.

“The states which commented [on the death sentences] violated all the international conventions that stipulate the respect of other states’ sovereignty regarding their internal issues,” the statement said.

“We fully refuse and denounce all the statements issues by all countries regarding the latest judicial rulings,” the statement added. “We do not accept the description of our judiciary as unacceptable and unfair.”
