Egyptian judiciary is 'scandalous', says well-known coup supporter

A former senior official of the Muslim Brotherhood has described the Egyptian judiciary as “scandalous”, Almesryoon.com reported on Saturday. Dr Kamal Al-Helbawy is now a prominent supporter of the coup which ousted Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

According to Dr Al-Helbawy, the death sentences handed down to Muslim Brotherhood leaders and members, which are awaiting ratification by Egypt’s Grand Mufti, are a source of scandal before the whole world.

Speaking on Al-Asema TV, Al-Helbawy said: “I hope that President Al-Sisi is hearing me. The judiciary in Egypt looks like two parts, not one part. It is impossible for a judge to issue 600 death sentences without lawyers. These verdicts caused us to look scandalous before the eyes of the world.”

Despite the existence of a Constitution which oversees the rulings of the courts in Egypt, continued the ex-Brotherhood official, “one judge looks like he is working in Egypt while another looks like he’s working somewhere else.”
