‘The suffering of Sunnis in Iraq is unprecedented’

The suffering of Sunnis in Iraq these days at the hands of ISIS and the popular mobilisation militias, with local, regional and international support, is unprecedented and has never been witnessed before in history, a former senior Iraqi diplomat said.

In an exclusive interview with Quds Press, former Ambassador to the UN, Salah Omar Al-Ali explained that it has now become clear that ISIS is nothing but an armed tool used by regional and international parties to achieve political objectives in Iraq and the region.

“It is clear that the international forces that have an influence on Iraq operate according to specific strategies that serve their interests and favour them over the interests of the Iraqi people. I do not think that any normal person, as well as a politician or a media professional, would still doubt that the organisation of the Islamic State, known as ISIS, was created to achieve political goals,” Al-Ali said.

“Such enormous power enjoyed by an organisation like ISIS, with an unidentified target, controlling the vast majority of Iraq and Syria, confirms that Iraq has become an arena for regional and international conflicts with no ethics and values. Unfortunately, the massacre is continuing with the participation of the United States and the greater goal is clear for every sane person: convincing the Iraqi citizen that the unity of Iraq has become impossible, and there is no alternative but to accept the division of Iraq between Shias and Sunnis,” he explained.
