Saudi appoints first ambassador to Iraq in 24 years

June 3, 2015 at 11:07 am

Saudi Arabia announced that it has appointed its first ambassador to Iraq in 24 years, the Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

Saudi Foreign Relations Committee member Abbas Al-Bayati told Anadolu that reinstating ambassador to Iraq is a positive measure to improving relations between the two countries.

He called for more positive measures, saying: “Both countries need to cooperate regarding the war on terrorism. We need a continuous improvement of bilateral relations.”

The Saudi parliamentarian said Qatari Foreign Minister Khalid Al-Atiyya’s visit to Iraq had a “very big impact on the new phase of relations between the Gulf states and Iraq.”

Al-Bayati called for Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Egypt to form an “umbrella” in order to take “serious measures” regarding the war on terrorism and to be able to reach “active solutions” for the “chronic” problems in the region.

Saudi closed its embassy in Baghdad in 1991 after Saddam Hussein’s regime invaded Kuwait.
