Egypt demands billions as compensation from Muslim Brotherhood

The Egyptian body in charge of appealing against the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies has prepared a financial compensation memorandum in respect of the alleged losses to the country because of pro-democracy protests, Alamatonline.com reported on Tuesday.

Lawyer Ashraf Mukhtar filed this memorandum at the Cairo Criminal Court. It demands initial financial compensation estimated at 3 billion Egyptian pounds (around $350 million) for the losses said to have been caused by the protests.

Meanwhile, the same memorandum demands 1 billion Egyptian pounds compensation from Baytul-Maqdis group and 500 million from Ajnad Misr. Both groups allegedly existed in Sinai and are said to be responsible for the deadly attacks against Egyptian troops which began before the military coup in 2013.

A United Arab Emirates study centre released the news about the memorandum. It said that there is full documentation of the damages caused to state property over the past two years.

This case is similar to previous examples against ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his Interior Minister Habib Al-Adly, who were accused of cutting internet supplies on 28 January, 2011 during the Egyptian revolution.
