Jordan denies it is expanding into Syria, Iraq

June 24, 2015 at 8:39 am

Jordan’s Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications Mohammad Momani yesterday denied reports that the kingdom intends to expand its territories beyond its borders.

“Jordan respects other countries’ sovereignty… In fact, we help these countries regain their stability and security,” Momani told reporters in the capital Amman.

“Jordan understands the need to respect the sovereignty of nations and consolidate security and stability in the region,” he added.

Earlier, media reports misinterpreted remarks by Jordan’s King Abdullah II who said during his meeting with Bedouin clans in north Jordan that the kingdom will provide support for Syrians and Iraqis.

The minister pointed out that Jordan will continue to play its humanitarian role in helping Syrians, including the Druze.

But “there are no talks or even thoughts about opening a safe passage to allow thousands of refugees into the kingdom,” Momani explained.
