Twenty-four people were killed and scores were injured in a suicide bombing targeting a Shia mosque in the Kuwaiti capital during Friday prayers.

Thabet Al-Muhanna, governor of Kuwait City, said in a press release that “a suicide bomber blew himself up inside the Imam Sadiq Mosque in the Sawaber area in the Kuwaiti capital during Friday prayers. We estimate five casualties in addition to a number of injured people who were taken to hospital.”

An eyewitness told reporters that “the terrorist entered the mosque and exploded himself during the third section of the prayer.”

ISIS has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a statement posted on social media.
