Bernardino Leon responds to claims he 'plotted' Egypt coup

July 10, 2015 at 2:38 pm

Former EU Special Representative to the Southern Mediterranean, Bernardino Leon, said he was involved in an initiative to help Egypt resolve what he called the “Two Squares Crisis,” in reference to the rival demonstrations held in Rabaa Square and Tahrir Square following the July 3 military coup.

The objective of the initiative was to reach an agreement between the parties to avoid potential clashes, Leon added.

Leon’s remarks, broadcast by Al Jazeera, came after media reports suggesting Leon was involved in negotiations to topple the democratically-elected president Mohamed Morsi, based on statements by post-coup Egyptian vice-president Mohamed Elbaradei.
