Kerry: Iran is still an adversary

July 20, 2015 at 2:19 pm

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday that Iran is still an enemy of the United States.

During an interview with the “Face the Nation” programme broadcasted by American CBS channel, Kerry said that Iran has been the United States’ enemy in the past and “we are still enemies… We are not allies or friends.”

Kerry’s remarks came in response to statements made by by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday that his country’s policy towards “the arrogant US administration” will not change despite the nuclear deal reached between the Islamic Republic and the world powers, and that his country will not trust the US because “American politicians are not honest and unfair.”

Kerry added that the nature of relations is not necessarily important “because we know that Iran without a nuclear weapon is much different from an Iran which possesses a nuclear weapon, and that the Middle East is safer without nuclear weapons.”

Kerry urged US Congress to approve the agreement, saying that if lawmakers reject the agreement, “there will be no restrictions on Iran,” and that the United States’ allies will “abandon us” in pursuit of sanctions.

“We will be seen as to have killed the opportunity to prevent [Iran] from owning a weapon. They will begin enriching uranium again and the biggest possibility is what the president pointed to, which is the outbreak of war,” he noted.
