US State Department sends Iran nuclear deal to Congress

July 20, 2015 at 1:48 pm

The US State Department announced on Sunday that it has transmitted the nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the world powers on Tuesday to the US Congress for a vote.

A statement issued by the department’s spokesman said the Congress has 60 days starting on Monday to review the agreement and its annexes and related materials, before voting on it at an unspecified time.

US President, Barack Obama announced that he will use the “right to veto” if the Congress voted against the deal.

In that event, the Senate must vote with a two-thirds majority, at least 67 members, in order to overrule the president’s veto – which means that Obama only needs the support of 34 senators to overcome any objection.

Congress is expected to vote on the deal in September.
