UN votes in favour of Palestine resolution

The United Nations Economic and Social Council has voted in favour of a resolution on the “economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the Palestinian people’s living conditions in the occupied territories.”

On Monday, 42 countries voted in favour of the resolution, which was opposed by the United States and Australia. Panama and Honduras abstained.

Palestine Permanent Observer to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, said during a statement before the Council that “the Palestinian people live in dire conditions under the Israeli occupation because of the oppressive, destructive and colonial policies which Israel, the occupying power, continues to practice in a deliberate, systematic and serious violation of the law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and with complete impunity from punishment.”

Mansour expressed appreciation for the efforts of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in this regard.

Mansour also pointed to the international community’s failure to hold Israel accountable for its crimes and the Israeli government’s blatant refusal to work towards peace and its continuing provocative and inflammatory practices.
