Gun-fire exchanged on Tunisian-Libyan border

July 22, 2015 at 11:04 am

Tunisian troops exchanged fire with an anonymous armed group at the Tunisian-Libyan border town of Ben Guerdane, Anadolu agency reported on Tuesday.

The exchange came as Tunisian troops attempted to prevent the members of the armed group, consisting of a number of black-market oil traders, from entering the Tunisian soil.

According to witnesses, the traders crossed the Libyan-Tunisian borders and Tunisian troops stopped them. The traders called for help from another armed group and exchanged fire with Tunisian troops.

Speaking to Anadolu, witnesses said that the fire exchange did not last for a long time and there were no casualties from either side.

Tunis has begun digging a 220km-long trench along the borders with Libya in an attempt to fight “terrorism” and smuggling.
