Iraqi Parliamentary Commission calls on government to increase military cooperation with Iran

The Parliamentary Commission on Security and Defence yesterday called on the Iraqi government to increase military cooperation with Iran.

“We would like the government and parliament to cooperate with the Islamic Republic of Iran in arming, equipping and training Iraqi army personnel because we believe that Iran is a neighbouring country with a large military potential,” Commission Chairman Hakim Al-Zamili told reporters.

“Several armament contracts that Iraq has signed with the United States have not been implemented, unlike Iran which opened its stores for Iraq in its war against ISIS.”

The Commission announced mid-July that a majority of armament contracts signed with the United States have not been fulfilled and that Iraq received “only a quarter of the contracted arms” noting that “Iraq has spent $149 billion on armaments since 2003”.

Al-Zamili called on those responsible for purchasing weapons to purchase weapons with better efficiency than the weapons imported from China and Russia noting that Iran promised to supply Baghdad with weapons of high efficiency at good rates.
