Egypt to receive eight F-16 fighter jets from US

July 31, 2015 at 9:48 am

The United States will deliver eight US-made F-16 fighter jets to Egypt in an effort to help fight extremism and to bolster security in the region, the US Embassy in Cairo announced yesterday.

“The F-16 Block 52 aircraft will be flown directly from the US to Egypt and will be immediately integrated into the Egyptian Air Force,” a statement said.

Senior US Defence Official in Cairo Major General Charles Hooper said: “The F-16s provide a valuable capability that is needed during these times of regional instability.”

Cooper reiterated his country’s commitment to supporting Egypt through “cooperation and continuous exchange of capacity”.

The aircrafts are part of a $1.3 billion plan to upgrade Egypt’s military amid increased threats from extremist groups.

The United States is scheduled to deliver another four F-16 fighter jets to Egypt later this year, in addition to continued support, follow-up, maintenance and training provided to Egyptian pilots and ground crews, according to the statement.

The newly acquired aircrafts will likely participate in the air shows that will accompany the opening of the new Suez Canal on 6 August along with French Rafale and Frigate fighters.
