Iraq denounces Kurdish plan to annex Sinjar

August 4, 2015 at 12:17 pm

The State of Law Coalition yesterday rejected remarks by Kurdish President Masoud Barzani that he plans to include Sinjar to his remit, the Anadolu Agency reported.

Leader of the State of Law Coalition Mohamed Al-Sahyoud said: “Sinjar is one of the disputed areas and its administration is run by the Federal Government… No one can include it in Northern Iraq.”

“There are no bilateral understandings between Northern Iraq and the Federal Government to include Sinjar in Northern Iraq.”

According to the constitution, Al-Sahyoud explained, the disputed areas are Iraqi lands. He noted that Northern Iraq is acting based on “personal greed” not based on the interest of the Kurds.

Early yesterday, Barzani said: “We do not think of handing Sinjar over to any side. We are aiming to annex it to Kurdistan and we will work with Baghdad to turn it into a governorate.”
